How an eye problem is usually assessed

It starts with questions: what has changed in your sight, since when, in one eye or both, suddenly or slowly. Conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, your medicines, your family history and any past eye surgery matter too.

Then each eye is measured and the front and back of the eye are examined. If needed, tests such as OCT, a visual field or a corneal map are requested, and their results are read together with the examination.

Treatment options are explained, with the benefits and risks of each. Sometimes the best step for now is monitoring.
